Here's the reply from
the Watermark

It was encouraging to read on these pages the words of John Mertz expressing the centric point of view
favored by the majority membership of the Key West Neighborhood Association. We clearly tried to
delineate between the radical minority and the good people of Distrct 1 in our guest commentary to the
Key West Citizen. Our charge of irrational behavior and political terrorism is directed toward the small
group of people that deserve these monikers – they know who they are. Unfortunately, the KWNA chose
to propagate the rhetoric and misinformation of this minority group through the pages of your website,
thereby unduly associating themselves with this irrational faction.

Too often during the Watermark discussion, this civil majority has been drowned out by the white-hot
noise of this radical minority.
1. Mr. Mertz concedes KWNA did not press its case effectively. It is our view the well-intentioned efforts
were undermined by extremists who chose rhetoric over reason. The Watermark process and outcome
prove that success is found through civil discussion and thoughtful compromise, while radical ranting is
marginalized and doomed to failure.

We concur there is more that unites us than divides us, and we appreciate the acknowledgement of the
poll cited by Mr. Mertz that a majority of members have found acceptable the many changes we have
made to Watermark. We reiterate these changes were made first in response to civil discussions with
responsible members.

The Watermark buyers who will soon be your neighbors well know and appreciate the character of these
streets. We have no doubt you will enjoy their company and we will encourage them to become part of the
association.

There is a natural selection to public discourse that inevitably renders extinct the radical margins. As this
evolution occurs, we welcome the rise of the more thoughtful majority who well serve the KWNA.

Respectfully,
