THE MONKEY IN THE CAGE
A former New York State Commissioner of Conservation  once remarked
that, "You can take the most beautiful view in the world, and  set out a
monkey in a cage, and 95% of the people that go there will see the monkey
in the cage and that's all that they'll see."
So herewith are a few scenic
photographs.

At this point one might ask, "Nice, but what has this got to do with the Florida Keys and/or Key West?

Nothing, other than the fact that as a resort community goes through the "Stages of Development,"
often the "Monkey in the Cage Syndrome" comes into play. Substitute amusements or attractions
sometimes replace the original attractions that make a place popular.

As an extreme example, bungee jumping might replace bonefishing.

The good news is that for a number of reasons, this type of "substitution" has not yet been excessive on
our local communities.

The bad news is that the tendency to go the "Monkey in the Cage" route is market driven, and left to
its own devices,  can lead a community straight into a "Stage Four" situation.

There are clear signs of our  inexorable and rapid slide into  "Stage Four."
