HERE'S PART OF A LETTER FROM A LADY WHO IS AN "UMPTEENTH GENERATION" NATIVE CONCH, BUT WHOSE FAMILY MOVED UPSTATE ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO....
....I had to get your letter out of our "Christmas mail box" and reread it, after seeing keysnews.com this morning: "Decision Pending on Transient Rentals." It seems "they" are still trying to hoodwink the people to get what they want!! They've even come up with a category called "second homes" that allows fewer than 28 day rentals! It never stops! Thank God I left. I don't think I would have had the strength to keep fighting!!
There might be some saving grace with David Audlin as the judge. I remember him well when he represented the city, when I was asked to appear as a witness. I know he has an excellent grasp of the Comprehensive Plan. We will see!!.... **
** Editor's note. We did see, and apparently he did.

DID YA EVER HAPPEN TO NOTICE HOW, EVERY FEW MONTHS THERE APPEARS ANOTHER "LETTER TO THE EDITOR" FROM SOMEONE TELLING US HOW WE NEED TO ALLOW "TRANSIENT RENTALS" ALL OVER, IN ORDER TO SAVE OURSELVES FROM "ECONOMIC DISASTER"?
A RECENT ONE WAS HOW THEY NEEDED TO MAKE ALL RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES THE LOWER KEYS INTO DE FACTO HOTELS, FOR OUR OWN GOOD. NEVER MIND THAT THE MIDDLE CLASS IS NOW AN ENDANGERED SPECIES DOWN HERE.
ARE THESE LETTERS COMING FROM GRASS-ROOTS CITIZENS OR ARE THEY PART OF A WELL-OILED PROFESSIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS SCHEME? (DUH!)
BELOW ARE A FEW OF THE REBUTTALS TO A SIMILAR EFFORT THAT APPEARED RECENTLY IN CITIZENS' VOICE. FOR SOME REASON, INEXPLICABLY, THEY HAD ZEROED IN ON THEY KIND OF PEOPLE OFTEN SHOWN AT COCKTAIL PARTIES IN TOM OOSERHOUDT'S CONCH COLOR IN THE APPARENT BELIEF THAT THESE WERE THEY SAME PEOPLE WHO HAD FINANCED LAST STAND'S LEGAL EXPENSES IN THE "TRANSIENT UNIT TRANSFER" CASE REFERRED TO IN THE LETTER ABOVE!
"We're having a party to discuss the City's Comprehensive Plan-- all are invited, including Conch Color photographers, commercial elites, and the guy with the missing sock. BYO PA system, if you want to be heard-- we have a transient rental next door."
"If you are in favor of dismissing the City's Comprehensive Plan, that will work out great. We can put transient rentals in your neighborhood, and make up any shortfall in money. Great idea!"
"Anyone who thinks that selling out Old Town (or any other part of town) to the transient rental crowd is going to lower your property taxes is out of their gourd! Nice try, but we aren't that stupid!"

“If a local citizen were dying, we would hold blood drives and benefits to help her get better. But with our community wasting away, the most notable activity seems to be hand-wringing.”
"Is there one, repeat, ONE, local politician who even might have some ideas about how to save our community? If there is, I wish he or she would stand up. So far I feel like Diogenes with his lantern, looking for an honest man...."

I don't disagree with your analysis; however, another (possible) outcome is that Key West ends up to be a winter resort for the very rich and closes down for the most part in the summer and fall, much like Palm Beach today or say, Nantucket Island. Either way the character changes, as folks like myself can no longer afford to live and work here.

Thanks for your message!
For those of us out of town for the summer, what is the latest on beach closings? We've been told that our polluted water is of our own making...that the sewer laterals, which we paid plenty for, were not connected properly.
Many of us feel the destruction of our near shore waters is at the top of the list of the most tragic events of recent years. What are our candidates saying, if anything, about this issue? **

Good presentation. Please keep me on your mailing list. Based on the intro., I'm very interested in the concept.

FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED
Together we can make a difference. There is no reason for us to go to the "lowest common denominator," or to let purely monetary forces set the course of our future. If enough of us speak out, we can certainly prevent the inevitable degradation of our community and environment. There is no doubt that we can do better.
